What a difference a day makes...

Twenty-four little hours... When I was younger I had a tendency to think apocalyptically. I would wring my hands about what I'd done wrong in the past and fret about what might happen in the future. Living in the Now was never in my consciousness. At age 46, I still fall prey to worry and obsessive thinking about events that are not yet here. I once heard someone put it this way: FEAR stands for Future Events Appear Real. Intellectually, I've been around long enough, and taken enough side roads…See More

This incident breaks my heart. I met Aasiya when she brought her children to one of our first big Obama rallies before the NY Primary. She was a beautiful intelligent woman. Her daughter came in and interned with us for several weeks for credit in…

The title to this blog comes from a W.H. Auden poem. I first heard the line quoted by Kelsey Grammar. Imagine that. Ever since hearing it, it has stuck in my mind and when I am in a quandry about why life is so difficult, it has floated to the surface like an answer in a Magic 8 Ball.

Several months ago, I blogged about being unemployed. I am still unemployed. I dutifully reported three days (actually 6 hours) of freelance proofreading I'd done to NYS Unemployment and in response I… Continue

Happy Wind-sday, Piglet!

I heard a snippet of a speech once that encouraged people to ascertain which Winnie the Pooh character they were, and if they were an Eeyore, then try to become more like a Tigger.

I've been an Eeyore all my life. Oh, occasionally I've had a Tigger moment -- when I get the job I wanted, when the cute guy asked me out, when I lost a pound. Also, when I've had too much to drink (which doesn't happen anymore).

I've also had Piglet moments. I've gone through a day or an… Continue

When I grow up...

Posted on December 4, 2008 at 7:56am 7 Comments

...I don't know what I want to be. Or rather, I know what I want to be but I don't know if I can support myself by being that. Huh? I'm seriously thinking about going back to school. I'm unemployed and the job prospects aren't looking that attractive. I don't want to go back into advertising. So I'm thinking about either an MFA in creative nonfiction or an MFA in film.

I feel like I don't know where to begin. I feel like I need a mentor. I feel like I'm going to spend a lot of time… Continue

I am indeed Ben Kirst, and I am the "online interactive manager" (kind of editor/PR guy) for Buffalo.com. Didn't you used to do some writing for Fredonia State from time to time?

Cindy, you can't be freakin' serious!!!!!!! How could anyone mistake mild, reserved, normal Cindy for me? LOL People should realize that I probably look as insane as I am (refer to the oreo discussion, I've tried them with mustard on them and I'm going to try the suggestion of ketchup on salad as soon as I can get past the nightmare of the job of coring heads of letuce). LOL Does this mean I'm officially famous? LOL Okay, I'm going to start getting as paranoid as Slade pretty soon. Poor Slade, he's so confused. I think I need to go have a talk with him. "Dude, go out on tour, it's better than tiling bathrooms" LOL I'm soooooooooooooo looking forward to hearing chapter one of your story tomorrow. I may even sleep tonight so it makes more sense. LOL

Still checking up on you, Cindy. No blog entry since the 12th? I'm hoping that's because you've been working hard on something to share at the meet-up on Thursday. See you there.
