I read Mad In America before i read Soteria. Mad in America kind of leads into it. Pharmaceutical companies originally used Thorazine as a neuroleptic or "chemical lobotamy" because of socieitys view on the mentally ill to shut them up and ship 'em away. After all america started the whole eugenics idea that the Nazis took to the extreme. Well anyways during around the 1840's during the time of moral treatment the rocovery rate faired about the same as today. The WHO has long known that 3 rd world countries the recovery rate for schizophrenia is extremely high rate (around 65%)of recovered vs disabled. if you're lucky around 20% in the US and other developed countries. One of the main differences is antipsychotic drugs and who their society accepts and helps them. There is the whole dopamine THEORY but even that is very flawed. THe drugs promote long term disability. They cover up the symptoms just for them to come back with tolerance to the drugs in more intensity due to the idea that your brain just grows more dopamine receptors to make up for the ones all these neuroleptics(antipsychotics) are so helping these people that they cal mentally ill. Even successfull schizophrenics like John Nash. If you listen to the directors commentary it says he had not taken his medicine in years. Soteria was a place where young people newly diagnosed with schizophrenia could be "crazy" and condemned for it when they are in the most terrified moment of their life. Many of the recoveries took long months of psychotic states of mind but they recovered at a cheaper cost then the current method. At soteria drugs where used little if at all and only on clients request. Interesting book. It also leads to about corruption with big pharma because we would hardly use meds at all and i think Zyprexa alone makes 4.5billion a year. Europe has similar places in europe because i think they're ahead of us in a lot of ways. heres a link to a commericial for a european soteria http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRpTCgCoRnE&feature=channel_page Sorry for such a long post. Just a spur of the moment.

I read a book earlier this semester entitled Mad In America (Robert Whitaker) that referenced Loren Mosher quite a bit. Not a terrific book (sortof an airport read) but may be helpful, as much of the book was focused on the debate between medical v. moral treatment...

Hi Aaron, I'm absolutely not a specialist of psychology but if you could sheld a light on how he is so controversial....Maybe it's a long story and I should just google it but....

I'm wondering if anyone has read anything or done any research on Dr. Loren Mosher relating to psychology. He has a few books and many research papers and has controversial ideas which led to why he resigned from the NIMH which he worked in for about 12 years. I own one of Loren Mosher's books (Soteria) and it is now on order at the Buffalo Public Library due to my request and I find it like an Ephiphany in psychology but his work is largely unknown and critizized due to its controvertial nature yet backed up with a lot of research.

I go to UB and I love it! I'm a math major graduating in May, hopefully I won't have to move out of the area to find a job...
